Andre 3000 to play Jimi Hendrix

"A Real Jimi Hendrix Movie"

(Get out the Popcorn and spike the Purple Haze Punch Bowl)

By Glenn Peppers

Have you heard? Recording artist/actor, Andre 3000 is starring in the new Bio pic movie, about the life and times of rock legend, Jimi Hendrix!

Simply put. I think Andre (born
AndrĂ© Lauren Benjamin) will make a really good Jimi Hendrix! I really do!!! He kinda even looks like him as well! I truly cannot wait to see this movie, as I also think that Andre will be much better at playing Hendrix than that guy HBO pick to play Jimi Hendrix for their made for TV Bio Pic a few years back!

Guitar pioneer, Jimi Hendrix was one of the guys we (me and the guys in our band) emulated coming along in my early days of funk, rock and soul in the 1970's... Yes it was that long ago! It was a time when we were young rock and roll wannabes; and our parents (God Bless them) suffered through our painful teenage era of bandanas around the knees, and our wild fizzy hair styles. They put up with all our crazy colored (ti-dyed) shirts, and bell bottom pants and jeans, and platform shoes, and those louder than loud amps and PA systems! As well as our bushy/curly, wrecked Hendrix Fro's!

I mean, com'on! Who needed one of those neatly trimmed Jackson 5 Afros when you can sport a salad headed, Jimi-Fro? Our bass player was the splitting image of Jimi. Yet we wore the english cut jackets and short frilly vest, and ruffled tuxedo shirts, and buttons down the side of our pants, just like Jimi did. And when I finally did get a real Fender Stratocaster (which was way later along in my guitar evolution than I wanted), I found out why Jimi loved playing Fender guitars so much. It's almost as if they are practically playing themselves! A Fender Stratocaster has a twang and a sound all its own! Hendrix of course loved the classic Strat with a maple neck. He also liked the Fender Telecaster guitar. Being in a black rock and soul band in the early to mid 1970's, we studied every nuance of the Jim Hendrix Experience, except for drugs!

Drugs (to me) was Jimi's dangerous crossover into the dark side of things; and that's where the "Are You Experience" joyride through cross town traffic stopped for me and my friends. Being that there were many other heroes out here to emulate and learn from in the music world, I then started to venture out and learn from other musical, and vocal mentors in the business. From artist like EWF, The Ohio Players, Carlos Santana, Peabo Bryson, Edgar Winter, Larry Graham, Sly Stone, etc!

Fallen and taken away from us in a most common, yet tragic rock and roll fashion. The sad tale of rock and roll, and drugs and alcohol took its toll on Hendrix in 1971. Jimi left here way too soon! Though tortured and yet driven while alive, I had to respect Jimi's painful climb to rock guitar hero status; yet his belly flop into the dark abyss of Rock and Roll was his and his alone to take! Hendrix suffered for his art. And I image sadly, he'd probably do it all over again. Who can say actually? The truth of the matter is, as much as you love and admire anyone. You can walk only so far in their shoes!

Why we Love White Gangsters

“Why we Love White Gangsters”

By Glenn Peppers

Amazing how we all glorify the horrible crimes depicted of people in the past. In fantasy, as well as in real life. Especially the likes of gangsters and thugs of white america in film, yet people of color who are portrayed as gangsters, and folks of ill repute in cinema are thought of most often times as lowlifes, hooligans and animals! Most people will tell you (black or white) that "The Godfather" was and is their most favorite movie of all time! Followed by Scarface! The original 1932 film, and the 1983, Oliver Stone/ Al Pacino remake.

We in america love our white gangsters film stars! Hollywood made them handsome, romantic, brave, and tough! America loved gangsters like, James Cagney as “The Public Enemy.” Back in the 1930‘s and 1940’s, being a gangster meant you were a Real Tough Guy! You were a quarter flippin’ George Raft kinda guy. Yeah we did it! We made heroes of gangsters, and we partly have Hollywood to blame! In film, (as in real life) Cinema represented the gangster spirit of america’s “Conquer and Rule” ideal set forth with pioneering settlers during america’s colonizing period of the old west; pillaging and marauding the land, and its indigenous inhabitants (native americans), and calling those who did so, heroes in folklore and song! What would stop it from continuing in the american cinema?

In later years, Lawrence Fishburne played real life Gangster, Bumpy Johnson in the movie, “Hoodlum.” I thought it was an admirable role, and I felt it was an excellent movie, yet “Hoodlum” went largely un-noticed by white movie goers. Apparently not many envisioned Hoodlum as a hero type gangster. At the very least, not one to be admired!

The Godfather came off as a movie that depicted mainly recently immigrant Italian men (and their children), just after turn of the century Chicago. They came off as proud/principled men who took what they wanted. Ate well, lived well, married well, dressed well, and despite their many sins against humanity, displayed an unshakable honor among themselves in this quiet, well shot Brian Depalma film, which was beautifully directed. The film neatly set them in the heartland of america, scratching, and demanding their place in the american lexicon and mainstream. And for some reason, we all (myself included) love and revere films like The Godfather, Scarface, and Public Enemy stories as kind of a history to to honored, and remembered...and watched at least twice out of a year on Blue Ray/DVD/Cable!
Still we all have to think about why is it ok to love and admire a white gangster, thief and murderer, and not one of Arab, African, or Asian decent. Why wouldn’t an Asian gangster saying “Leave the Gun, take the Egg Rolls!” sound as cool and iconic to us as the classic Godfather line: “Leave the Gun, Take the Cannoli?” Would we find it offensive, stereotypical, or just not Hollywood cool enough? And if so, why?

I think African American movies like "Set it Off" starring Jada Pinkett and Queen Latifah, (a movie featuring four down on their luck black women pushed to the brink of financial desperation, resorting in bank robbery) somewhat changed that view with its sincere story line, its endearing/relatable home-girl camaraderie, and Thelma and Louise flavor in the ending. Still, as endearing as the characters are in “Set it Off,” many outside black culture saw the movie simply as typical, and the characters only as ghetto, female bank robbing thugs; and not well meaning, disadvantaged americans women, fighting and clawing their way into a corner of happiness, and the so called american dream!

A most underrated Film

Personally, I enjoyed “Set it Off,” as it showed first hand from a black female perspective how easy it can be for one to be pushed into desperately doing something you never thought you’d ever do to survive. Set it Off also showed how easily things can go horribly wrong, in an instant!

Back in america’s gangster heyday, plenty Chicagoans justified the crimes and the likes of Al Capone, mainly because Capone did actually give back to his community. Yet and still, just because its white crime, doesn’t make it good crime! Fascinating... There's even polarizing racism in crime!

George Zimmerman’s Karma Comeuppance

George Zimmerman’s Karma Comeuppance                                              By  Glenn Peppers

This is my Letter to one George Zimmerman. Fearful Police wannabe, and all around general coward!

Mr. George M. Zimmerman. Frightened little man that you are! Because of your actions, and an almost convincing fake, tinker toy trial that granted you a “Not Guilty” verdict for openly murdering teenager, Trayvon Martin. You have the unfortunate curse of being deemed a Free Man, as a result. Yet I feel it only fair to inform you that for the rest of your life, because you are now a public figure; you will forever be looking over your shoulder, living in fear. Mind you, I feel that no one will ever have to harm you. In fact, it is not my wish that anyone would. I’m that kind of a person. I am one who holds no ill will towards his follow man. No matter how cowardice and despicable a person he may be! This fear for your safety will also become a concern for your family, whereas when you put yourself out here for all the world to judge. Now they too have to share your loss of privacy, and public scorn!

Have you even thought that for years to come, you will be ducking, hiding, and will forever be profiled, and judged everywhere you go? Because of your actions, you'll be hated, and stalked, and pursued. Your dreams will soon be filled with nervous anticipation and foreboding. Sleep and decent rest will start to elude you! Feeling uncomfortable wherever you lay your head, you'll probably end up having to move from place to place, and town to town, as you will never feel safe in any one place you take up residence. This is because of the fear that is in you! Aside from your former domestic issues, your marriage and other relationships could soon start to suffer! And even though there are people around you who claim they support you, eventually when the fanfare wears off, folks with doubts will start to become scarce, and begin to fade away; as one day they will start to question your motives for everything you do, and have done.

You'll one day start to have endless of bouts with depression. Your legal entanglements will press on for years, wearing you out. Given who you are, and what you’ve done, I wonder where it is you’ll find employment? I am curious as to who would hire an admitted child murderer! What company or corporation would chance ruining their business for hiring the likes of a George Zimmerman? During these times, I wonder will your father/former judge be able to bail you out of all your on-coming troubles, as you sink deep down into that long black tunnel of despair. On sleepless nights, you'll surly have to deal with your conscious on the ever weighing act of gunning down a child walking home with purchased food items and a cell phone in his hands, as the years drag by! For in your lonely mind, George Zimmerman, you will one day start to go into yourself, and soon guilt will drive you to the brink of insanity!
I am certain that you will re-live that night, every night for a million years in hell! That hell being in your own lying, twisted little mind. For little did you know that in trying to kill what you seemed to hate most. You exposed yourself and your loved ones to your seedy little world! A world you’ve build up in your mind, made up of hate, fear, and retribution! Yet in the coming months or years, those images will always be there... 24 hours a day. 365 and one half days a year, it will be there. The sound of the shot. The smell of the gun powder! The look of pain on Trayvon’s face as he falls! The sound of his body as it impacts the ground! Sure for now, this may not bother you. Your adrenaline is still too high to care right now, isn’t it? Yet stronger than the fact that you recently killed a child is your hatred for what you (for a lifetime) have feared and hated most of all. That being Black People in general!
So congratulations Mr. Zimmerman! As a result of your self-justified act of murder, you have succeeded in becoming what you feared and hated most!, Here is, your price for freedom, for murdering a child in cold blood. This prize is dipped in fear, and soaked in blood!  As a result of your new fearful, and hated status, you'll forever know what its like to be pursued, profiled, stalked, and hated by millions. Know it or not, you have officially become a member of the most uniquely hated, and unjustly feared group of people the white race has so passionately loveed to despise. You Sir have officially become, a Black Man! Welcome to Hell, George Zimmerman!

"Cooler heads will Prevail" by Glenn Peppers

After much reading and watching people’s videos, and hearing all the many commentaries, and even making a few myself. It is my perception after all this that Cooler Heads will Prevail! Not to say that action (legal and/or commerce-wise) and diligence should be omitted. Hell no! I’ve watched the media firestorm with this trial turn people into a complete Emotional Wreck! Myself included. Yet, we all should know better shouldn’t we? I mean, hasn’t even the slightest bit of suspicion crept up in your mind that this was all set up; and all played out just to throw in the pit and have us clawing at each others throats!

I’ve heard and seen video to some pretty fiery and inflammatory opinions and statements in response to this fake out verdict. In these past few days, I’ve seen and heard good friends go at each other, and all in the name of “I’m Right” selfishness. Yes, the “I’m Right Syndrome,” and all the anger over people not understanding your feelings, opinions and points of view! Admit it (if you’re black)! All any black person wants is for someone to understand how you feel when our freedoms, and our civil rights, and self respect is openly being trampled upon! To not even try to understand this (I feel) shows a gross insensitivity problem, or some weird superior power thing going on; or maybe you’re just that insensitive! If this be the case, I’m glad I’m finding that out about who you are!

This crime challenged the deepest of most everyone’s emotions and sensibilities. Black white or otherwise! Scathingly as you know, that verdict loudly screamed that it is OK to stalk and kill an unarmed black child, in the name of Stand Your Ground, and self defense, in 2013; and that as a result, you can simply walk away scott free from it! Deep in ones heart, you gotta believe that anyone who really feels that way is numb inside! Maybe you are more racist than you knew! Face it, had this situation happened to a white child, or a child from any other race, where a teenager had been killed in the exact same manner, wouldn’t that particular race have been totally thrown for a loop, and unnerved and deeply upset to the point of riots? Yes Riot! Com’on now, I watch the news too. I’ve seen white folks flip over cars, and torch plenty downtown metropolis’ over just losing (or even winning) a football game! Let’s be honest ‘bout it! This trial played on all our sensibilities like a cheap fiddle at a Klan Rally! Look at us all! We’ve become raving lunatics! And all in the name of justice!... But wait!... Now isn’t that what they want us to do, act a fool?

As I sit back and looked at clips from trial. Preferably the prosecuting teams performance. To me, they came off like the prize fighter sent into the ring to make the fight look good, and make it appear as if he were really slugging it out, trying his hardest to win; and yet all the while is really Throwing the Fight! Come on now, give me a break! First and foremost, Not one African American on that jury, at all? If I’m not mistaken, there was one hispanic female! And to that, well think about it. How did you really think that this one hispanic woman would identify with her white juror-peers? You really think she would have disputed their not guilty verdict efforts?

Television, and social media has made this trial a real firestorm! Agreeably, I understand the fury among black folk! “How do you ask?” You say! Well, basically its because I am a black man! A black male who has been profiled by the police, more times than I can count on all my fingers and toes (and I still have all of them) many times over. I’ve experienced being jumped, ganged up on, and almost being shot by a police officer at the age of 14. I’ll never forget the time that there was these intoxicated white kids in a convertible, driving north on Mt. Elliot, throwing glass bottles of urine at me and my friends when I was a kid. Not to mention the possible thousands of subtle direct, and in-direct racist comments, digs, derogatory remarks, judgements, wrongful discharges, and on the job harassment's, false accusations made towards me out of fear, and untold bigotry, and countless other incidents I’ve experienced with race that I’ve locked away in my heart over a lifetime! Yet, through all this, for some reason, I still think I see Oz back working feverishly behind that big red curtain, pulling the strings and working all those gadgets, and making with the fake thunder and lightening, going Boom-Flash-Crash-Clang!

Our buttons were being pushed ya’ll, and we still don’t even see it! Oh why start a Race War in America? Why waste all that effort? That’s too much damned work, hating folks! Yet apparently there are people out here putting in big overtime doing so! Sadly I’m sure there are people who have their reasons for wanting such a thing. Being somewhat of an intelligent kind-a guy, I think its a big waste of energy! One things is certain though, you sure can do a lot ‘to and with’ people when they are a complete emotional wreck, and all heated up, hot headed, hot blooded, and all divided and ready to fight each other, huh? I’m not saying don’t be mad or angry at this situation, and to forget all about these serious civil rights, and race issues at hand, and just let it slide! No way am I saying anything close to that. All I’m saying is there are more creative ways to handle this funk, and this pent up anger without losing our minds, our friends and family members, and our self respect.

For me, as a rule. Florida is completely off limits!... Period! And its not just the Stand your Ground law there either. We have SYG here too. And as a CPL holder, if a cowardice and unwittingly stupid George Zimmerman wannabe type comes-a-stalking, and thinks he has a perfect victim in me, he’ll have to match wits and skills with the likes of someone like myself; and to be fair... that might not be this persons greatest (or smartest) ambition!
Moreover, it is Florida’s disregard for human life within its law enforcement, and judicial system that I greatly distrust. Case in point; the convicting of a black woman to 20 years in prison for discharging a weapon in her home, by giving off a warning shot, was denied her Stand Your Ground status as she tried to fend off an abusive spouse. In other words, this woman, Marissa Alexander (who had been abused by her husband) also felt threatened (much like George Zimmerman claimed he was), yet somehow the Stand Your Ground law didn’t apply to her situation... She was sentenced to twenty years in prison, and yet no one was killed!

Then there is the case of Casey Anthony. Simply put; “what kind of jury lets a murdering monster with a baby face walk free?...” a Florida jury of course! No way will I willfully ever set foot in Florida! I find that it is especially Florida’s predatory dealings with people of color, and also again, by various law enforcement and hate groups that I will not tolerate. All who seem to operate openly, and at will, terrorizing and brutalizing blacks, hispanics, haitians and cubans, with extreme malice and impunity! Therefore, as a rule, Florida is dead to me!
Use your brains people! There’s a Disneyland in California if you just ‘have’ to go! Orlando (in my opinion) was grossly over rated, and far too crowded; and by the way, Florida isn’t the only state to make orange juice! Its way too hot in just about anywhere in Florida for me, and every hurricane that comes sailing off the Atlantic has destroyed it more times than Godzilla has crushed Tokyo, Japan! So why go? If the Zimmerman-types, the rouge cops, and the gangs, and judicial system doesn’t kill you the damned Hurricanes will!

There are other ports of call along the east coast in which to sail out from, in order to get to Jamaica, St. Croix, The Virgin Islands, and the Bahamas, etc. All along the east coast! So if I ever take a notion to do the cruise thing, there are plenty of places to set sail from other than setting foot in Florida!
One of the last photos taken in court days before the defense rest their case showed Zimmerman turning and slyly winking at his attorney. Most people would have just shrugged it off, and maybe already have as nothing at all! I saw it as a nod, or (as they say in Poker) “a Tell!” What was it about that one picture that let me know that the deck could quite possibly be stacked in the defense’ favor, and that the cards could quite possibly be marked? Call it a hunch! Just a feeling I guess! I could be wrong about all this, and maybe everything else I made mention of! This could all just one big fat coincidence! Hey, I’ve been wrong before! Still the vibe I felt in that snap shot was one that said. “We’ve got this thing well in hand!” So if that be true, then why? Why let a wimp loser like George Zimmerman go free, even after he admitted murdering an unarmed 17 year old kid? Who knows? All I know is, out here, in the real world, through it all, Cooler Heads will Prevail, and Money Talks, loud and clear!
